There's a story my Dad likes to tell about his wedding day. It's that when he married my Mum, they had a big party and everybody got drunk. Then, afterwards, he drove my Mum home extremely drunk in a car with no brakes! He's a great story-teller and he loves to recount how he had to use the clutch to slow the car down and could hardly see what he was doing he was so drunk! This (apparently) is a true story. My Mum can vouch for it. Shocking isn't it? To imagine such an event now-a-days you'd expect the story to end in an horrific accident... But before you judge my Dad, you must remember this was the 60s, a time when there were no drink-drive laws. That's right, back then it was not illegal to get behind the wheel of a car under the influence of alcohol. Mercifully, Mum and Dad survived to tell the tale, but they could've so easily been killed, or killed someone else, it's ridiculous that it was never not law. I'm always reminded of this story at this time of year, when drink-driving is so prevalent in the media.
