This unique patient simulator from VATA is the first of its kind. The Bonnie Bone Marrow Biopsy Skills Trainer has been designed with input from practising clinicians to replicate, teach, and reinforce the specialist skills required to carry out a posterior iliac crest bone marrow biopsy procedure.
This medical simulation trainer allows students to experience a realistic feel when puncturing the surface of the skin, entering the iliac crest bone, and extracting simulated bone marrow samples.
To create a life-like scenario when treating patients in lateral decubitus (side-lying) positions, the VATA Bonnie Bone Marrow Biopsy Skills trainer can be set up to suit the training requirements. Either with the included tilt stand or positioned on a flat, table-like surface to accommodate the prone position.
The right and left iliac crest bones have been designed to be removed and replaced. The included bones also incorporate simulated bone marrow that can be extracted during simulated biopsy procedures to confirm that an accurate technique has been used.
Developed with the help of clinicians, this bone marrow extraction training simulator allows for:
- Palpation of the spinous process and iliac crest bones on both the anterior and posterior sides.
- Correct biopsy needle placement.
- Simulation of realistic patient positioning with the included tilt base.
- 200+ accesses before replacement parts are needed

- A life-size scale and anatomy for patient simulation, modelled from an average size female pelvis and lower spine.
- The outer shell of this anatomical medical training model provides a soft, tissue-like feel allowing the palpation of underlying bony landmarks, such as the spinous process, and the anterior and posterior iliac crests to facilitate correct and accurate biopsy needle placement.
- The creative design also includes a replaceable puncture site skin inserts allowing for multiple needle punctures.
