How the University of Hertfordshire Uses the RealCare Baby Programme

You may have seen from our previous blog that this month we’re sharing a series of RealCare Baby Programme case studies from our customers. These insights show how different organisations and institutions have successfully integrated the RealCare Baby Programme into their teaching, helping you see how it could be incorporated into your own courses.

Today, we’re focusing on the University of Hertfordshire and exploring how their lecturers and students have been using the RealCare Baby Programme to enhance teaching and learning.

Which Courses Use the RealCare Baby Programme?

The University of Hertfordshire has been incorporating the RealCare Baby Programme into the curriculum for their BSc (Hons) Nursing (Children’s) students.

Following its success, the university is now considering rolling out the RealCare Baby Programme into other childcare and nursing courses, further extending its impact.

As part of the programme, students took their RealCare Babies home for a period of 30 hours, giving them first-hand experience of parenting in a home environment. This real-life simulation is something no textbook can replicate, making it an invaluable teaching tool.

How Has the RealCare Baby Programme Aided Learning?

The RealCare Baby Programme provides students with an opportunity to experience the real demands of infant care and gain valuable insights into the challenges of parenting.

Before introducing the RealCare Baby Programme, the university faced a common issue: how to apply theoretical baby care knowledge to real-life scenarios without relying on real infants.

With the RealCare Baby Programme, students benefit from a hands-on, immersive experience, learning how to:

  • Respond to the needs of a baby

  • Develop empathy and insight into parental feelings

  • Manage the realities of round-the-clock infant care

The Children’s Nursing Programme at the university aims to help students understand and appreciate the parental perspective. The RealCare Baby Programme has proven to be an integral practical teaching tool, enriching both academic knowledge and emotional understanding.

What Do Students Think of the RealCare Baby Programme?

Students reported that they thoroughly enjoyed participating in the RealCare Baby Programme. They felt it provided them with:

  • Valuable hands-on experience of caring for a child

  • Greater empathy for parents and the challenges of 24/7 infant care

  • A realistic sense of what it’s like to manage feeding, changing, and comforting a baby

Taking a RealCare Baby home changed their views on how easy or difficult it might be to look after a baby, helping them to truly appreciate the demands and responsibilities that parents face every day.
