How Wrexham County Borough Council Uses the RealCare Baby Programme

Today, we’re looking at how Wrexham County Borough Council have been using the RealCare Baby Programme to enhance teaching and learning. 

Wrexham County Borough Council has introduced the RealCare Baby Programme to support young people in schools studying Health and Social Care courses as well as those involved in the Agored Cymru baby simulator project. 

The programme has become an invaluable tool for raising awareness about the realities and responsibilities of parenthood. Over the past three years, more than 100 young people aged 14–16 have taken part, with many choosing to take the babies home, a feature that has proven especially popular.

The programme gives students practical, hands-on experience of caring for a baby, helping them to: 

• Understand the level of responsibility parenting involves 

• Appreciate how having a baby at a young age can affect lifestyle and future opportunities 

• Develop empathy and decision-making skills through experiential learning 

This engaging approach prepares students more effectively for the future than traditional teaching methods alone.
