The Bone Clones Hominid Skulls Collection are high quality casts of key fossil discoveries, including anatomically modern humans, archaic humans, early Homo, and other hominins, representing a valuable addition to anthropological and evolutionary studies.
Neanderthals lived between 200,000 and 30,000 years ago. Some researchers view them as a subspecies of modern humans (Homo sapiens neanderthalensis), suggesting they were absorbed through interbreeding rather than going extinct. Others classify them as a distinct species (Homo neanderthalensis) that eventually died out.
Within the Homo Neanderthalensis collection, the following replica skulls are available:
- La Chapelle-aux-Saints Skull was the most complete Neanderthal skull found at the time. The individual has declined tooth sockets and severe arthritis in the neck indicating he lived a long time, earning this skulls name as the "old man".
- La Ferrassie 1 Skull is considered a "classic" Neanderthal, showcasing the key traits typical of the species: a low, long cranium with a sloping forehead, prominent double brow ridges, wide cheekbones, a weak chin, heavily worn front teeth, a large nasal opening, and an impressive brain capacity exceeding 1,600 cc.
- Skull Teshik-Tash (Child) of an estimated 9 years was possibly ritually buried, this specimen shows typical Neanderthal features like a large face, long low cranium, chinless jaw, and developing brow ridge. The skull was reconstructed from around 150 fragments.
- 1/2 Scale Model Skull is a detailed miniature skull sculpted by Steve Wagner, portable and precise these models are great for quick and easy hominid comparison
- Shanidar 1 Skull is part of a nearly complete skeleton of a 40–45-year-old Neanderthal male, found in Iraq. He suffered multiple serious injuries - including skull fractures and a disabling right arm injury - but survived for years, suggesting he received care from others. He likely died from a rockfall in the cave where he was found.
