This auditory ossicles anatomy model shows the three smallest bones which are joined together in the body: the malleus (hammer), stapes (stirrup) and incus (anvil). This A101 / 1012786 ossicle model is 20 times life-size which offers the chance of close study of the mechanics of the middle ear.
The ossicles transmit sound from the eardrum to the inner ear through the vestibular window, mechanically amplifying the sound. Loud sound can cause lasting damage to the inner ear, which can be protected by a reflex muscle movement of the stapedius muscle which tilts the stapes briefly interrupting the transmission of sound. If a sneeze or a cough should disturb the auditory ossicles too vigorously, the tensor timpani muscle will stick to the hammer and tighten the eardrum as protection. Otosclerosis causes hearing loss by stiffening the auditory ossicles. This ossicle model is an ideal teaching or demonstration aid.
