Osteosarcoma, a primary bone malignancy, often arises in the distal femur, affecting mainly children and older adults. They produce osteoid matrixes and secondary cases are associated with predisposing conditions. Symptoms include painful masses, with X-rays revealing bone destruction, and metastases commonly occurring in the lungs.
Osteosarcoma of Femur (Distal)
This specimen is a lower thigh bone with a substantial pale tumour, 10 cm in diameter, infiltrating the periosteum near the joint surface - indicative of femoral osteosarcoma.
Osteosarcoma of Femur
This specimen includes the head, neck, and upper part of the right femur's shaft, cut lengthwise to reveal an ovoid tumour in the medullary cavity. The tumour lacks encapsulation, displaying a haemorrhagic cut surface with pale hyaline and cystic regions.
